Emily Weiss has had a whirlwind year. The founder of Into The Gloss and Glossier CEO introduced international shipping in Canada, France and the United Kingdom, launched body care products and a new fragrance called Glossier You. While visiting Toronto for Glossier’s first-ever pop-up shop outside its New York home in September, Weiss chatted about her year in travel.
The itinerary
“I am very fortunate that travel is a big part of my job. As we’ve been preparing to open this year in Canada, the U.K. and France, I’ve hit up all those fabulous places. I also love to travel for inspiration so I go to Copenhagen a couple of times a year because I love the design there and the food. I went to Lake George for a family reunion. I also went on a hiking retreat in California – that was very inspiring to me. In December, I’ll be speaking in a conference in the U.K. in the countryside, which I’m looking forward to because I’ve never been outside of London. Then I’m going to Big Sur, California. I love to mix city and country so a lot of trips I take are quite dense in terms of itinerary. I like to balance that with trips where I just zone out and go hiking for ten miles a day.”
Travel essentials
“I always travel with a Glossier Balm Dotcom and I always manage to give them away because I’ll want someone to try it. My favourite used to be Coconut and then we launched Birthday Cake. I’m never without a heavy-duty moisturizer. I also love traveling with essential oils. I find Epsom salt baths really restorative. I’ve done two since my time in Toronto so I’ll buy two pounds of Epsom salt, bring my oils with me and just drop them in. I like ylang-ylang. Sometimes I’ll use lavender.”
In-flight skincare routine
“I don’t like to wear makeup on a flight and just like my skin to be as clean as possible. I wear a really thick layer of Priming Moisturizer Rich and lots of Balm Dotcom.”
On-the-go ritual
“I have seen candles and I’ve raised them with incense. Now I travel with Palo Santo incense and a little incense holder, and I’ll burn it in the morning when I meditate.”
Favourite beauty stopover
“In France, there’s a very glamorous fancy facialist called Joëlle Ciocco. I was fortunate enough to be treated to a facial at her place the last time I was there.”
Best beauty product she’s discovered abroad
“There’s a mask I got at Studio Cim Mahony, a hair salon in Copenhagen. [The owner is] also a distributor of a lot of cool indie brands that I haven’t even heard of. There’s a mask that I picked up there called Gielle, from a woman in Ojai, California who has a skincare range of organic products. I bought her clay mask that I’ve been using it a lot.”
